O’Reilly advocates for the teaching of breastfeeding in secondary schools

Senator O’Reilly’s recent Interview with the Independent’s Gabija Gataveckaite discussing the new sub-committee of the Oireachtas Women’s Caucus has teamed up with breastfeeding advocacy group Bainne Beatha to improve breastfeeding rates in Ireland;

Senator O’Reilly, who chairs the sub-committee of the Oireachtas Women’s Caucus that has partnered with breastfeeding advocacy group Bainne Beatha, emphasized the importance of boosting breastfeeding rates in Ireland. O’Reilly stated, “That means having more supports in the hospital system, but also making it a cultural norm. That’s where we see the advertising and education pieces come into place”. The committee is also pushing for more lactation specialists to be employed in the healthcare system and better data collection on breastfeeding.

Senator O’Reilly, who had previously passed a motion on breastfeeding in the Seanad, called for secondary school children to be educated about breastfeeding. She said, “You have more women per staff member in Ireland than any other country and you simply don’t have the people that can give women the kind of support they need”.
